Case Study: ENGINEERING A RECORD- BREAKING ELECTRIC HYPERCAR

​In 2017, we played a pivotal role in developing the NIO EP9, one of the world’s most advanced electric hypercars. Engineered to push the boundaries of EV performance, the EP9 was designed for extreme speed, precision handling, and cutting-edge aerodynamics. With a staggering 1,341 bhp (1 megawatt) power output and record-breaking lap times, it set new benchmarks for electric vehicle performance. NIO’s vision was to create a hypercar capable of rivalling the fastest internal combustion race cars while pioneering the future of high-performance EV technology.

This ambitious goal presented key challenges, including the development of a lightweight yet highly rigid chassis to withstand extreme cornering forces, an aerodynamically efficient design to maximize downforce and high-speed stability, and the seamless integration of a high-performance electric powertrain featuring four independent motors with torque vectoring. Additionally, the EP9 needed to meet track-ready durability and safety standards without compromising speed, solidifying its place as a groundbreaking achievement in electric vehicle engineering.

 

OUR ROLE:

Leveraging its extensive motorsport and high-performance automotive expertise, we worked closely with NIO to engineer, develop, and build the EP9. Key contributions included:

 

Chassis and Structural Engineering

  • Designed and developed a carbon fiber monocoque chassis, achieving three times the rigidity of an FIA LMP1 race car.

  • Engineered lightweight bodywork with advanced composite materials to optimize strength and weight.

 

Aerodynamics and Vehicle Dynamics

  • Developed an active aerodynamic system generating over 24,000 Newtons of downforce at 240 km/h, enabling extreme cornering speeds.

  • Optimised suspension and steering geometry to ensure precise handling and maximum grip on track.

 

Powertrain and Performance Integration

  • Supported the integration of a quad-motor electric powertrain, delivering 1 megawatt of power (1,341 bhp) with independent torque vectoring for unmatched agility.

  • Designed battery packaging solutions for rapid swapping, allowing track-ready operation with minimal downtime.

 

Testing and Validation

  • Conducted rigorous track testing and validation, fine-tuning the vehicle for maximum performance and durability.

  • Assisted in calibration and optimization of power delivery, aerodynamics, and vehicle control systems.

 

RESULT:

The NIO EP9, with engineering support from RML Group, became one of the fastest electric cars in the world, achieving:


🏆 Nürburgring Nordschleife Lap Record – 6:45.90 (Fastest EV lap at the time)
🏆 Circuit of the Americas Record – Fastest autonomous vehicle lap time
🏆 Unparalleled Performance – 0-200 km/h in 7.1 seconds, top speed 313 km/h (194 mph)

 

Our expertise in high-performance vehicle engineering, aerodynamics, and advanced materials played a crucial role in transforming the NIO EP9 from concept to reality. By delivering innovative design, precision engineering, and track-ready performance, we helped establish the EP9 as a true benchmark in electric hypercar technology.
