RML’s SHORT WHEELBASE STARTS TO TAKE SHAPE

 Image

A momentous day in the development of our Short Wheelbase: the first rear carbon-fibre composite clamshell, which represents more than half the first production’s car body, is complete and ready to take us to the next phase of our build schedule.

“This is a landmark stage as we near final P35 production,” said Nic Rutherford, Project Lead Engineer. “It’s also incredibly gratifying to see it physically, rather than virtually, as we have through the development phase.”

The quality of the clam has born out RML’s incredible attention to detail, with 99% of its myriad dimensions within a 2.5mm tolerance, and 60% being 1mm or less after being ‘dry-fitted’ to the Short Wheelbase’s steel backbone chassis. The rear clam itself comprises everything rear of the car’s A-pillars, including windscreen, rear-screen and door openings. Weighing just 40kg, it’s a full 30kg lighter than the equivalent structure on the Ferrari 550M donor car, too.

“Within the next few days, we’ll have the front clam to complete the structure, and once we’re happy that all tolerances fall within our strict parameters, both clams will be structurally bonded to the chassis, ready for the next build phase.”

Keep an eye out for more news very soon, as RML’s Short Wheelbase starts to take shape.
